Why use Interlex?
Unlimited Scope
Interlex lets you decide what you want to learn
and how you wish to learn it. The software can be used in conjunction
with a variety of learning materials, e.g. course books, newspapers
and magazines, literary texts, grammar books, multimedia CD-ROMs
etc. As long as you continue to study a foreign language, Interlex
will never become redundant.
Flexible Environment
The Interlex work environment is inherently flexible, since the
way vocabulary is tested is largely dependent on how it is entered
and on the amount of detail supplied. The needs and preferences
of different users are further accommodated by a wide range of options
that control response evaluation and feedback. There are four different
methods of testing vocabulary: into your native language, into a
foreign language and multiple choice (in both directions). Some
testing modes are more rigorous than others, so the learning process
can be divided into manageable stages. For example, you can use
multiple choice testing to gain a basic level of familiarity with
the material, and then use the other modes to learn it more and
more thoroughly.
Intelligent Testing
Interlex uses sophisticated methods of analysis both to set questions
and to evaluate responses. When evaluating a free text response
a wide range of criteria are used to decide whether it is correct.
Considerable variation may be allowed in the matching of capital
letters, punctuation, spaces, optional text, alternative variants
and multiple meanings. For example, the default settings for response
evaluation allow the following scenario:
| Expected answer: |
|
spare/free time, leisure (time) |
| Possible responses: |
|
spare time; free time; leisure; leisure time; leisure-time;
leisuretime; etc. |
Intelligent testing means that you do not waste time trying to
satisfy the computer's natural tendency towards absolute precision.
Broad Appeal
Interlex is suitable for language learners at all levels, from
beginner to professional linguist. It also caters for educators
with different approaches to language teaching. Teachers who wish
to promote independent learning can encourage their students to
build a collection of vocabulary files over the duration of their
course and then submit their work as evidence of private study.
Those who favour a more proactive approach can author their own
files to accompany a course, giving printed handouts in class and
encouraging students to learn the material in their own time.
Ease of Use
Ease of use was the top priority during the design of the Interlex
work environment. Many operations such as opening, saving, searching
and printing files are completely standard and will be immediately
understood by the most inexperienced of computer users. The online
help facility guides you through the essentials of working with
Interlex and provides comprehensive reference information. There
is also a 'Tip of the Day' option which gives the user a valuable
tip each time the program is started.
